  • Gebhart Blazek Earth and moon: kilims from the Ourika Valley / The Ourika Valley in the High Atlas region of southern Morocco, a place of idyllic beauty, has been a popular tourist destination since the period of the French protectorate. So it was surprising to discover that a previously unrecorded group of highly graphic Berber kilims, wich had first appeared on the markets as late as 2000, were made there. In 2004 the author travelled to the Ourika Valley with fellow Moroccan textile connoisseurs Wilfried Stanzer and Mustapja Hansali to learn more about this group of horizontally banded kilims, wich are entirely woven from natural light and dark coloured wool and are further defined by the use of characteristic lens shaped motifs.

Wool pile on a wool foundations. There is a little of substance in the oriental rug literature about this "unique" large carpet and its companions (two further substantially complete large carpets and five smaller fragments), which were discovered in 1905 by the Danish antiquarian F.R. Martin. They have traditionally been assigned to 13th century Konya on account of the building in which they were found, the mausoleum of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Kaykubad (r,1220-27), although there is no evidence that they came to the Alaeddin mosque complex as pious donations (vakf) at that time, and could be early Ottoman rather than Seljuk. No C-14 analysis has evefr been done. The presence of this and another of the grand "Seljuk" carpets, as well as the famous "bird" rug from Konya's Mevlana Museum at the Royal Academy, marks the first time any of them have been outside Turkey.
