Alpaca fibre, natural dyes, warp-faced plainweave with discontinuous warp inserts. The sleeveless tunic, with sewn sides leaving a space for the arms and discontinuous warp neck opening, has been the primary male overgarment of Andean highland culture for millennia, and is a textile of great social and ritual significance in native society. Close to the boundary with Bolivia, with Arequipa and Puno to the north and Chile to the south, Moquegua is both a town and an area in the southeastern part of the Peruvian highlands, an old Aymara stronghold from Tiahuanaco times, where great, early, and very interesting Aymara weavings have been found.

Esta túnica sin mangas —con los costados cosidos dejando espacio para los brazos y una abertura para el cuello formada mediante urdimbre discontinua— ha sido la prenda exterior masculina principal de la cultura de las tierras altas andinas durante milenios, constituyendo un textil de gran importancia social y ritual en la sociedad nativa. Situada cerca de la frontera con Bolivia, con Arequipa y Puno al norte y Chile al sur, Moquegua es tanto una ciudad como una región del sureste de la zona altoandina peruana; se trata de un antiguo bastión aimara que se remonta a la época de Tiahuanaco, donde se han hallado tejidos aimaras magníficos, tempranos y de gran interés.
