Campbell Pueblo ceremonial textiles 1840 - 1945 / The ancient weaving tradition of the Hopi, Zuni and other native tribal groups in the American Southwest, known collectively by the Spanish word Pueblo after their villages of stone-or mud-walled houses, is generally regarded as the precursor to the better known textiles of the Navajo. However, although eclipsed in public perception by 19th and 20th century Navajo blankets and rugs, the Pueblo ceremonial textile tradition remains very much alive.
Cotton warp ikat. Paporitonoling are said to come from the long-abandoned village of Tonoling, on the opposite bank of the Karam River from present day Kalumpang. This piece displays the characteristic features of bold treatment. The design is composed of selong, geometric elements that resolve into a genealogical diagram of interlocking ancestor figures - what could be more appropriate for a shroud as a chief transits to the next world?.
