|t An intoxicating vision: shamanic imagery in Pre-Columbian textiles /
|g Able through trance and the use of hallucinogens to enter the super-natural realm commune with the dead, Shamans inspired awe and reverence within pre-Columbian communities. In this article the author pursues themes of shapeshifting and metamorphosis, and key images such as the jaguar and the aplomado falcon. She finds a textile culture in whose richly inflected imagery reality is continuously rendered fantastic. =

|g Paracas embroidery fragment showing a reversible transformation scene, Peru, south coast, ca. 300 BC-200 AD. Camelid wool and cotton, stem-stitch embroidery, 13 x 23cm. This Necropolis embroidery depicts the experience of magical flight, a criterion of shamanic vocation. Two figures (a human face, a magical creature), upside down to each other, and yoked together at the crown, appear to represent two aspects of the shaman: in his human form, ingesting a mixture of hallucinogens; and as his shadow self, emerging out of his shadow self, emerging out of his head in the guise of a fantastic apparition. Covert references to hallucinogenic plants and ritualism include serpentine motifs on the headdress resembling the acacia beanpod, vilca, whose psychoactive seed were widely consumed across the region.
