|g Detail of a Russian Orthodox dalmatic (sakkos). Ottoman silk kemha, Istanbul, before 1583. The fabric is brocaded with design of the Virgin Mary standing with Christ Child, flanked by two angels, crosses, and floral arabesque of stylised flowers, against a white ground; The Russian placket, cuffs and yoke are heavily embroidered with green silk, seed pearls and enamelled and nielloed gold beads. A pearl-embroidered inscriptions on the sides of this dalmatic states that it was presented to the Cathedral of the Dormition by Tsar Ivan IV, "The Terrible" in 1583, in expiation for the murder of his son, the 27-yearl-old Prince Ivan, in 15811. The Kremlin documents linking it with Metropolitan Dionysius (1581-1586), appear to be entirely reliable.

Seda otomana tipo "kemha", Estambul, anterior a 1583.
