505 |t Imagen de la portada:  |g The Weighing of Shah Jahan on his Forty-Second Lunar Birthday (detail). Agra, Diwn-i-Khass, 23 October 1632. Padshahnama, folio 70B, painted by Bhola, ca. 1635. Beginning with the Mughal emperor Akhar and finally reaching full maturity under his grandson Shah Jahan, a style of miniature painting which placed great value on highly realistic portraiture - unique in the Islamic world up to that time - was developed in India. Concurrently, many of the textiles appearing in those paintings are extraordinarily detailed. Naturally one wonders wether they too are as accurately illustrated as the subjects of portraits. This painting shows, in the foreground, a clear representation of a section os a standar red-ground "Indo-Persian" carpet with a scrolling arabesque and palmette field and cloundband and pañmette border, although without the typical large scale palmettes that one might expect to see.
