505 |t Imagen de la portada:  |g Piety and Justice. The Quedlinburg carpet, detail of fragment II. Lower Saxony, Germany, late 12th century AD. 2.55 x 1.30m. Five fragments remain of the pile carpet made by the oblates of Quedlinburg Convent for Abbess Agnes of Meissen. They were found in the 19th century in the collegiate buildings, where they were being used as mats. The carpet shows scenes from Martianus Capella's Latin allegory of the marriage of Mercury and Philologia, an event attended by the nine Muses and seven Liberal Arts. The two standing figures embracing each other Piety and Justice appear in the top panel, which depicts symbolic figures as a prologue to the allegory. Also shown in this panel are enthroned representations of secular and spiritual power, and the virtues Prudence, Fortitude and a partially preserved Temperance.
