Persian Kurdistan, 19th century. 1.24 x 2.13m. Rugs from the region of Mahabad in Azerbaijan are among the most beautiful of all Kurdish tribal weavings. In style and shape this example reminds us of two rugs illustrated by William Eagleton which have the same characteristic red wefting. The individual motifs, with their "saw-edged" outlines, are related to those found on some early Anatolian village weavings, which may be of Kurdish origin. A further consideration is the possible relationship of these motifs to the Yomut kepse gül. This rug is an example of the marvellous quality of the best Kurdish weaving, and a reminder of the work still to be done in its classification.
