Woolen pile on a cotton foundation, 1.36 x 2.06m. During the Gion Matsuri Grand Procession in Kyoto, this striking rug is displayed on the front of the huge Tsuki-boko float, a position suggesting that it is, deservedly, held in very high esteem. Relating it to several carpets in the Amber Palace at Jaipur, Daniel Walker has plausibly attributed it, together with two other carpets in the Gion street associations' collections, to Labore, probably during the reign of Shah Jahan (1628-1658). Documents confirm that India was a source of carpets during the 17th century - Kanko-boko's Lahore rug is listed as having been purchased in 1650.
