- Imagen de la portada: "Sun Sign". Kaitag embroidered panel (detail), Daghestan, northeast Caucasus, 18th century or earlier. 0.71 x 0.98m. Animism survived into the 19th century in the mountain villages of Daghestan. The sun was worshipped both as the source light and warmth and as an agent of the agrarian cycle, connected with the growth of food. Mid-winter processions behind an idol were held to encourage the sun to return in order to melt the snow and start springtime for another year. It is therefore quite understandable that the sun sign appeared on many objects and in a variety of different materials. Sun signs also appear on tomb-stones and on the back of the spoon boxes which are found next to the hearth in every Kaitag home. The four colours of the blue ground, with boundaries clearly drawn in outline brick filling sticht, contribute to the power of the design.
- Imagen de la portada: "Símbolo solar". Panel bordado Kaitag (detalle), Daguestán, noreste del Cáucaso, siglo XVIII o anterior. 0,71 x 0,98 m.
