|g The Buccleuch European "Lotto" Arabesque Carpet. Last quarter 16th century. 1.34 x 1.78m. Wool pile on a flax (or hemp) foundation. This European version of the well-known Anatolian design differs significantly from the other three Anatolian design rugs at Boughton House, all of which have "star Ushak" designs, and may have been woven in a different place. European paintings provide evidence that the arabesque or Lotto pattern was popular in the West throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, and unlike many of the other famous Ushak patterns, remained so for at least another two hundred years. Apart from Spanish examples, however, this is the only known contemporaneous European pile weaving with this design.

Esta versión europea del conocido diseño de Anatolia difiere considerablemente de las otras tres alfombras de diseño anatolio conservadas en Boughton House —todas ellas con motivos de "estrella Ushak"— y es posible que se tejiera en un lugar distinto. Las pinturas europeas atestiguan que el motivo de arabescos o "Lotto" gozó de gran popularidad en Occidente a lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII y que, a diferencia de otros famosos diseños Ushak, mantuvo su vigencia durante al menos dos siglos más. No obstante, a excepción de los ejemplares españoles, se trata del único tejido de pelo europeo de la misma época que presenta este diseño.
