|g Autumn. Romano-Egyptian woollen embroidery on plainwoven linen tabby. Egypt(?), 4th century A.D. 27.5 x 26 cm. One of the earliest known examples of Romano-Egyptian embroidery and of exceptional rarity for its subject matter-many tapestry portraits of the period are known, but only four other embroidered portraits in addition to the Manchester pair discussed in this issue. Autumn is seen in three-quarter profile and is nimbed, a Roman mark of distinction reserved for deities. She carries a cloth containing pears and grapes, and wears a wreath of flowers and fruits in her hair. Probably produced in the workshops of Akhmîm, one of the largest weaving centres in northern Egypt, in style the embroidery is strongly influenced by Romano-Egyptian funeral portraiture of the 1 st to 4th centuries, of which many examples were recovered at Fayyum in northern Egypt.
