Kuba region, east Caucasus, 19th century. 1.08 x 1.40m. Elements of the familiar Perepedil design are arranged around a single octagonal medallions on a rare white ground, indicating a village provenance. Eberhart Herrmann describes this motif as a bizarre bird-like shape, but Christine Klose proposes a floral origin, on the basis of comparisons with Caucasian silk embroideries and dragon rugs. In her view, rugs such as this provide a link between the repeat design of an early 19th century Azerbaijan "floral" rug and the later, commercially produced dark-ground Perepedil rugs. Herrmann attributes the piece to Kuba for structural reasons and dates it to the second half of the 19th century.
