505 |t Imagen de la portada:  |g "Dancing Man". Chancay Painted Mantle (detail). Peru central coast, ca. 1000-1460 A.D. 1.07 x 2.18m. Male and female figures stand with hands upraised as if imploring us to pay attention. The effect is one of substance and ceremony. The colours used are subtle, almost monochromatic tones of brown, blue and gold. The male figure is particularly striking because of his bold blue outline, in the style of a caricature. His face stares out as if arrested in time. This quality of directness combined with an atmosphere of magical entrancement recalls the simplicity of childrens' drawings. The child-like figures combine a naïveté of expressions with the subtle sophistication of formal design.
