The weavers of this remarkable Nazca-Huari transitional period mantle employed complex techniques to achieve a result that might have been emulated by simpler means. Each of the stepped components was separately woven, removed from the loom, individually tie-dyed two or three times to obtain a three-colour design on each piece of cloth, and then returned to the loom for reassembly. This complex approach was perhaps necessary in order to obtain the highly saturated colours typical of tie-dyed textiles.
