Wool ans silk tapestry. Flanders Grammont or Enghien circa 1550. 3.66 x 2.34m. The composition of large, tangled leaves is enhanced by stalks of Indian corn and animals, among them a spirited horse, a wild lioness, parrots and other birds. This fabulous garden is outstanding for the subtlety of the blues and greens from which the rich golden elements emerge. To try and attach symbolic meaning to the outlandish flora and fauna is fruitless as they were primarily used for their decorative strength and typify the "exoticism" which influenced 16th century stylistic evolution. The use of new and disparate elements gives substance to an artistic universe where the unreal and the fantastic were sources of inspiration.
