505 |t Imagen de la portada:   |g Corner Patch detail of a Buddhist Priest's Twenty-five Column Robe or Kesa depicting a Guardian King. China early Ming Dynasty, 14/15th century A.D. 2.96 x 1.18m. The kesa is worn like a cloak, wrapped around the body, over the right shoulder, under the left arm and tied at the front. It can also be worn over both shoulders. A kesa was one of a Buddhist monk's few permitted possessions, given to him at the time of ordination and traditionally made from discarded clothes cut up and sewn together in a patchwork which evolved into a standard pattern with three to twenty-five columns of patched material within an outer border. Precious materials were purposely cut up to destroy their value before being reassembled, and only the highest ranking monks would wear kesa with twenty-five columna. This splendid example, illustrated in full and by other details in "Silks from the Middle Kingdom", is embroidered in a counted stich or petit point on a red gauze ground. Each figure and cloud is separately embroidered on a yellow silk ground, including some gold details, and then applied to the gauze. The embroidery is of the finest quality, creating a truly sumptuous garment.
