|g Kente Cloth Wrapper. Asante people, Ghana, 19th century. Cotton plain weave with cotton and silk supplementary weft, 1.31 x 0.82m. This unusual cloth is called Nkontompo n'tama (liar's cloth), because it includes the intriguing "liar's pattern" where warps change position from one side of the weft to the other, and was worn by a chief sitting in judgement to show that he could assess the veracity of the accused's evidence. The mixture of warp strings gives a rich effect to this rare cloth, and the inlay blocks are woven with yarns made from imported silk fabric that was subsequently unravelled. Their irregular distribution enhances the beauty of this textile.

Esta pieza inusual recibe el nombre de "Nkontompo n'tama" ("paño del mentiroso") debido a su intrigante diseño, en el que los hilos de la urdimbre cambian de posición de un lado a otro de la trama; era una prenda que vestía el jefe al presidir un juicio, simbolizando su capacidad para evaluar la veracidad del testimonio del acusado. La combinación de hilos de urdimbre confiere una gran riqueza visual a este tejido excepcional, y los bloques insertados están elaborados con hilos obtenidos al deshilachar tejidos de seda importados. Su distribución irregular realza la belleza de esta pieza textil.
